HCA Florida Kendall Hospital Physician Performs First Surgery of its Kind in the U.S., Thanks to New Cutting-Edge Technology

MIAMI, June 3, 2022 – Doctors at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital performed the first of its kind minimally invasive hysterectomy in the U.S., thanks to new technology available at only a few hospitals in the world. On May 28, Dr. Ricardo Estape, MD, Director of Gynecologic Oncology for HCA East Florida, successfully performed a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy. Dr. Estape removed the patient’s uterus and fallopian tubes, but the ovaries were intact. This surgery was done using the new Hominis Surgical System. This robot closely mimics a surgeon’s arms with shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints that provide human-like dexterity. It is cutting-edge technology currently only available at a few hospitals.

“We are thrilled to offer this procedure to our patients,” said Dr. Estape. “Hysterectomies are major surgery, but this latest technology allows for even less pain and less blood loss. Our patients can recover quickly with no visible scars.”

Dr. Estape’s first patient has had a remarkable recovery and feels excellent.

“At HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, we are always looking for ways to be innovative and on the leading edge of technology,” said Brandon Haushalter, hospital CEO. “The needs of those we serve are always our priority, and we are proud to be one of the few hospitals that can offer this procedure.”

Physicians at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital still perform traditional hysterectomies. They can provide patients with options and decide individually which surgery is best. If you would like to schedule an interview and video opportunities with Dr. Estape and the patient, please contact our media director, Jennifer Guerrieri, at 954-551-4447.
